Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the perfect adventure-game excuse: a flat, shameless lie that costs Guybrush nothing and tells you he is a chancer, not a pirate. Because it works as a catch-all reply to a missing item, fans quote it for any moment they cannot produce the thing someone asked for, and the pun-loving LucasArts writers kept reusing it as an in-joke across games.

Spoilers for Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's RevengeShow the scene

This is not a single scene but a recurring dodge. Whenever someone in a Monkey Island game demands something Guybrush plainly does not have, such as proof of age or an ID card, he can answer that he must have left it in his other pants. Fan wikis tie the excuse to the library card he uses to buy drinks at the Bloody Lip on Scabb Island, a Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge location, and note that it turned up again in the series and in other LucasArts adventures. Wikiquote lists it among the series' running gags.
