Getsuga Tensho!

— Bleach ‧ 2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Getsuga Tensho is Ichigo's signature: a crescent of condensed spirit power fired from Zangetsu's blade, shouted at the moment of release. It is the shonen special move at its purest, a called-out attack that fans copy at conventions and in the playground. The name carries a twist, because the technique was never really Ichigo's: it was Zangetsu's all along.

The attack's name is Ichigo's battle cry in Bleach's Soul Society arc. On Sokyoku Hill, on the day set for Rukia's execution, Ichigo demands that Captain Byakuya Kuchiki show his Bankai. Byakuya answers by releasing Senbonzakura, and Ichigo fires a Getsuga Tensho ("Moon Fang Heaven-Piercer") that tears through the whole cloud of blades in one blast. The anime covers the clash in episode 57. Fans note that Ichigo had used the slash several times earlier without knowing its name; naming it makes it stronger.
