Bankai!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Bankai is the word that marks Bleach's power ceiling: shouting it means a character is done holding back. Ichigo's arrives as a reversal, a substitute Shinigami out-pacing a noble captain who thought a Bankai was beyond him. The shout became shorthand for any all-in finishing move, and the series built a whole genre of Bankai reveals around it.

Spoilers for BleachShow the scene

Bankai (Japanese for "Final Release") is the second and last upgrade of a Shinigami's Zanpakuto. Ichigo's first Bankai comes in chapter 162 of the Soul Society arc, in his rematch with Byakuya Kuchiki on Sokyoku Hill. As Byakuya mocks him as a stolen-power Shinigami with no lineage, Ichigo grips Zangetsu in both hands and releases it. A burst of energy blasts off the hill's edge, and when it clears he stands in a ragged black coat holding a slim black sword, Tensa Zangetsu. Moments later he has the tip of the blade at Byakuya's throat.
