Rebellions are built on hope.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is the film's argument in a sentence: the Rebellion starts with long odds and bets everything on belief. It gives a prequel with a known ending its emotional engine, since everyone knows the plans get through and these characters do not survive. Fans use it as a slogan for any long-shot cause, and it is the film's most quoted line.

Spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars StoryShow the scene

After Jedha City is destroyed by the Death Star and her father is dead, Jyn Erso returns to the Rebel base on Yavin 4 and faces the Alliance council, who are weighing whether to risk an attack to steal the Death Star plans. Jyn argues that the Rebellion has to act rather than run, telling them it is a matter of choice and not chance, and answers Senator Pamlo's doubt with the line. Her speech wins over some of the council, but without full agreement Mon Mothma refuses to approve a mission, and Jyn storms out. According to the Wookieepedia account, the phrase is one Cassian Andor first says to her on Jedha.
