Kenshiro

You are already dead.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Kenshiro says it as a statement of fact, not a threat: the pressure points are already struck, and the victim simply hasn't noticed his own body giving out yet. The deadpan delivery and the opponent's baffled 'what?' made the exchange a template that fans were quoting decades later; in the 2010s, as "Omae wa mou shindeiru" followed by a shocked "Nani?!", it became one of the best-known anime memes.

Spoilers for Fist of the North StarShow the scene

Kenshiro is the successor to Hokuto Shinken, an ancient martial art that kills by striking hidden pressure points and destroying the enemy from within, and he wanders a post-nuclear wasteland protecting the helpless. When the Zeed gang, mohawked punks branded with a Z, raid the village of the girl Rin and hold her captive, Kenshiro dispatches the gang's men and then fights their leader. He hits the leader with the Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken, the North Star Hundred Crack Fist, and as the man rises for a counter-attack Kenshiro says the line. The leader gasps 'What?' and dies.
