Gentlemen, your work today has been outstanding and I intend to recommend you all for promotion... in whatever fleet we end up serving.
— Star Trek III: The Search For Spock • 1984
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Kirk recognizes outstanding work with the prospect of promotion, then qualifies the institution in which that reward might happen. The final phrase makes the future affiliation uncertain while leaving the praise intact. Professional recognition and unsettled circumstances occupy the same announcement.
