A paladin in gleaming gold plate charges with sword raised into a red-lit hall full of dragon eggs and whelps, while his armoured party throws up their hands in a doorway behind him.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Leeroy is the patron saint of wrecking a perfect plan with pure enthusiasm. The charge stayed funny because every group that has planned too long recognises the friend who would run in anyway. The makers have said they thought it was obvious satire, and whether it was staged was never confirmed, which only helped the legend.

Spoilers for World of WarcraftShow the scene

This is not a line from the game's script but from a fan video. Leeroy!! was posted on 11 May 2005 by the guild Pals for Life: while the raid group plans a precise assault on the Rookery in Upper Blackrock Spire, Leeroy is away from his keyboard preparing chicken. He returns, says let's do this, and charges in shouting his name, and the hatching dragon whelps wipe the party. His excuse is that at least he has chicken. Ben Schulz created the character; Blizzard later added a World of Warcraft achievement and a Hearthstone card.
