Battle cry of the Horde in World of Warcraft

For the Horde!

— World of Warcraft • 2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It started as a shout for monsters the earlier games had taught players to see as villains, and became a badge of pride for the underdog side. 'For the Horde!' now works as a loud yes to anything in or beyond Azeroth: a rallying cry for a raid, a team, a fandom. Paired with 'For the Alliance!' it is the shorthand for the game's whole rivalry.

Spoilers for World of WarcraftShow the scene

The Horde is one of the two factions a World of Warcraft (2004) player chooses between; its original playable races were the orcs, trolls, tauren and undead. "For the Horde!" is the faction's rallying cry, and the game also gives it as the name of a player-versus-player achievement: slay the leaders of the Alliance by overthrowing the Council, executing the Exarch and putting out the Light. The 20-point achievement rewards the Reins of the Black War Bear.
