Battle cry of the Alliance in World of Warcraft

For the Alliance!

— World of Warcraft · 2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A few words that tell a stranger which side of the war you are on. The cry carries the game's biggest design idea: you choose a faction when you create a character, and from then on the other side is the enemy, so shouting it in a city or a battleground works as a team flag. It also works as a joke wherever two camps exist.

Spoilers for World of WarcraftShow the scene

In World of Warcraft (2004) a new player must choose between two opposing factions, the Alliance or the Horde, as in the earlier Warcraft games. "For the Alliance!" is the rallying cry of the first, and the game also gives it as the name of a player-versus-player achievement: slay the leaders of the Horde, in the Quel'Thalas and Orgrimmar encounters. Completing it, worth 20 points, rewards a mount, the Reins of the Black War Bear.
