Hey, maybe you haven’t been keeping up with current events, but we just got our asses kicked pal!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the film's reality check, shouted by its biggest mouth. Hudson spends the movie bragging, then sees clearly that arguing about a profit-minded plan means nothing after a defeat, and the sarcasm lands because the whole room knows he is right. People quote it when someone keeps negotiating while everything is already on fire.

Spoilers for AliensShow the scene

After the Marines' first raid on the alien nest in Aliens has gone catastrophically wrong, the survivors argue about what to do next. Ripley wants to nuke the site from orbit. Company man Carter Burke objects that the species is important and that nobody has the right to exterminate it. Ripley says he is wrong, and Vasquez backs her. Hudson cuts in with this line, aimed at Burke, reminding him that the Marines have just lost badly. Burke answers that he cannot authorise the action, and Ripley turns to Hicks as the senior surviving marine.
