Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The narrator catches the player at their most gleeful: nobody asked the Kid to smash the furniture, and Rucks says so with a shrug. The joke is that the game has been watching, and it is the cheapest, warmest way Bastion makes the player feel like the protagonist rather than a viewer. Fans quote it as the game's signature voice, the line that sums up why a narrator who reacts is worth more than one who explains.

Spoilers for BastionShow the scene

Bastion (Supergiant Games, 2011) is narrated live by Rucks, an old survivor of the Calamity voiced by Logan Cunningham, who comments on what the Kid does as the player does it. The team added the narrator early on so the world could be explained without text screens or cutscenes, and wrote him in short, dry phrases with long pauses, like an old acquaintance. This line is one of those reactive remarks, said when the player carries on wrecking the scenery with their weapon after a fight is over; if the player moves on instead, it is never heard.
