In the name of the Moon, I'll punish you!
— Sailor Moon • 1992
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speech is the series in miniature: a girl who cries and oversleeps becomes a champion who scolds. The word that matters is punish; oshioki is what a strict older sister or teacher does, so the threat is cheeky rather than lethal. Parodies from Excel Saga to Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo borrow the pose, which shows how completely it became anime shorthand for the magical girl.

Sailor Moon's catchphrase is a stock speech for cornering a monster: she introduces herself as the Pretty Guardian who fights for love and justice, names herself, then declares that in the name of the Moon she will punish you. In the 1990s anime Usagi Tsukino, renamed Serena in the DiC and Cloverway dubs, delivers it with a pointing pose. The Japanese is "Tsuki ni kawatte oshioki yo".
