Romeo and Juliet

William Shakespeare

Good night, good night! parting is such sweet sorrow, That I shall say good night till it be morrow.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Saying good night becomes a way of extending the very parting it announces. The pleasure of remaining together and the pain of leaving occupy the same phrase. Promising to repeat the farewell until morning makes reluctance to separate both tender and playfully excessive.
