Meditations

Marcus Aurelius

That which is not good for the swarm, neither is it good for the bee.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The bee and swarm make individual welfare depend on the wider community. In this view, something cannot truly benefit one member if it fails to benefit the whole. The compact comparison challenges a definition of personal advantage that ignores the group sustaining it.
