Tetsuo Shima

Kaneda!

— Akira  ·  1988

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Two names shouted across a collapsing body: the whole film in one exchange. Tetsuo has spent the story resenting the older boy he always trailed behind, yet at the end it is Kaneda's name he cries. The pairing became the film's most-imitated cry, and fans quote it for the friendship, not the explosion.

Spoilers for AkiraShow the scene

The climax of Akira (1988), in the stadium being built for the Neo-Tokyo Olympics. Tetsuo Shima, the biker-gang kid whose psychic powers have grown out of control, has torn through the city to reach the vault holding Akira and found only preserved remains. His new robotic arm hurts him and he is losing control of his body. Kaneda, his old friend and gang leader, has followed him to avenge Yamagata, killed earlier by Tetsuo, and fights him again. The two shout each other's names, Tetsuo's "Kaneda!" answered by Kaneda's "Tetsuo!", as Tetsuo's body swells into a mass of flesh that swallows the stadium and Kaneda.
