Lelouch vi Britannia

I, Lelouch vi Britannia, command you! Now, all of you... Die!

— Code Geass  ·  2006

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the show's mission statement and first big reveal: Lelouch announcing his birthright at the moment he decides to use it as a weapon. The line frames the series as a story about command and its cost, since his power works only by spending other people. The 'I command you' formula became his signature, quoted and parodied across the fandom.

Spoilers for Code GeassShow the scene

In episode 1, Lelouch, a Britannian schoolboy, has been caught in the chaos of the Shinjuku Ghetto and finds himself facing Royal Guard soldiers. The mysterious girl C.C. has offered him the power of Geass, and he accepts her contract. The soldiers hesitate over shooting a schoolboy; Lelouch tells them the only ones who should kill are those prepared to be killed, then says: "I, Lelouch vi Britannia, command you... now all of you... die!" The soldiers obey at once, and the episode ends on the first use of his Geass.
