Agumon, digivolve to... Greymon!

— Digimon Adventure  ·  1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The call is half transformation sequence, half promise: a partner gives its all because a kid believes in it. The pause before the new name is the whole payoff, so the line gets shouted by fans at birthdays, cosplay and any moment that deserves a power-up. Games have even joked that shouting it is not what triggers the change, which only works because everybody knows the ritual.

The call is the catchphrase of Digimon Adventure's partner Digimon, and Agumon's "digivolve to... Greymon!" is the series' defining example. Agumon first shouts it in episode 2, "The Birth of Greymon" (Japan 14 March 1999; the English dub aired 21 August 1999). The seven DigiDestined children have fallen to a beach lined with phone booths in the Digital World when a Shellmon attacks, and Taichi's partner, already grown from Koromon to Agumon in episode 1, is left to protect everyone. Energy shared with his partner lets him digivolve into the bigger, dinosaur-like Greymon, who answers the threat with his Nova Blast.
