Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Naming the sword is the trigger: in Fate, a Noble Phantasm is released by speaking its true name, so the shout is Saber spending her biggest card in one word and, to anyone who knows the legend, announcing that she is King Arthur. It stays the series' signature battle cry, tied to the golden beam, and it echoes through every Fate spin-off, game and remake that followed.

Spoilers for Fate/stay nightShow the scene

In the 2006 Studio Deen adaptation of Fate/stay night, Saber's Noble Phantasm is the holy sword Excalibur. Its first great showing is episode 12, "Split the Sky" (24 March 2006), when Saber and Shirou hunt Rider and Shinji through Fuyuki. When the fight with Rider begins, Saber is forced to unleash Excalibur to defeat her. Episode 21 brings the sword back against Gilgamesh, after Shirou traces a sheath for it. Fans count Excalibur's collision with Rider's Bellerophon as one of the story's visual high points.
