A heart is a heavy burden.
— Howl's Moving Castle · 2004
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
A quip with a double edge: a heart is literally the burden Howl gave away, and the phrase is also Sophie's way of saying that caring about people costs something. It lands as warmth rather than a lecture because the film has shown a man who ran from feeling to avoid exactly this weight. It is a favourite caption for fans of the film.

In the film's finale, the war is ending and Sophie has gone through Howl's memories to find the heart that the fire demon Calcifer has carried since Howl's boyhood. Back with the others, she asks the Witch of the Waste for Howl's heart and places it into his chest, reviving him and freeing Calcifer. Howl wakes saying he feels terrible, as if a weight were pressing on his chest, and Sophie answers lightly: "A heart is a heavy burden." Moments later he remarks that her hair looks like starlight.
