Naruto Uzumaki

I'm gonna be Hokage!

— Naruto  ·  2002

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Hokage is the title of the strongest ninja in the village, and Naruto shouts for it because he has nothing else: no family, no respect, and a grudge against everyone who looks through him. The line is a kid's boast that the whole series then spends 700 episodes earning. Fans still shout it as shorthand for an impossible goal said out loud with total conviction.

Spoilers for NarutoShow the scene

The dream is stated in the very first episode of Naruto, "Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!" (Japanese broadcast 3 October 2002, English dub 2005). Naruto, the village prankster who has failed the graduation exam, tells his teacher Iruka that he will be Hokage, the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village, so that everyone who ignores him will have to look up to him. He repeats it in the Team 7 introductions a few episodes later, as "the next Hokage", and the vow becomes the series' running promise. The Japanese form is "Ore wa Hokage ni naru!"; the dub's wording shifts between "gonna be" and "going to be".
