Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Released when the web was still new, the line reads as both promise and threat: a connected world that dissolves the boundary between self and network. Fans quote it as the series' mission statement and it has aged into an eerie prophecy of the always-online era.

Spoilers for Serial Experiments LainShow the scene

The words appear as the tagline of Serial Experiments Lain (1998), and they echo a scene in the second episode, "Girls" (Layer 02, aired July 13, 1998). After a shooting at the Cyberia nightclub by a man under the influence of the drug Accela, Lain eerily tells him that everyone is connected in the Wired no matter where they are, and the traumatised man promptly shoots himself. The idea of a network joining every mind runs through the whole series.
