A blue hedgehog in red-and-white sneakers races across a green hill toward a golden loop and rings, a two-tailed fox close behind, with speed lines blurring the bright landscape.

The English theme song of Sonic X (2003)

Gotta go fast!

— Sonic X  ·  2003

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The song is one long catchphrase: speed, a hedgehog and no time for relaxation, packed into about a minute. English-language viewers met Sonic through those few words, which is why 'gotta go fast' outlived the dub and the show and now stands for the character himself. Wikipedia counts it among the lasting Sonic catchphrases.

Spoilers for Sonic XShow the scene

"Gotta Go Fast" is the opening theme of the 4Kids Entertainment North American dub of the anime Sonic X. It played on all 78 episodes of the US run, which aired from 23 August 2003 to 6 May 2006, in full over the intro and shortened over the end credits. The credited composers are Norman J. Grossfeld, Joseph Garrity and Russell Velázquez, and the lyrics open with the title chanted over "Go, g-go, g-go" before moving on to "quickest hedgehog around".
