Haruhi Suzumiya

I'm not interested in ordinary humans. If any of you are aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers, come and see me.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the series' mission statement and Haruhi's whole character in four categories: a girl so bored by the ordinary world that she announces she wants the impossible to come and find her. The joke is that she is already surrounded by exactly what she asks for, and the one person who knows is Kyon. Fans quote it as the pitch for any story that begins with someone demanding that the extraordinary turn up, and the list of supernatural types became shorthand for the whole show.

Spoilers for The Melancholy of Haruhi SuzumiyaShow the scene

Haruhi Suzumiya makes this speech in the first scene of the series proper, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I" (aired 9 April 2006, after the broadcast-order opener "The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00"). It is the first day of high school, and each student in Class 1-5 is introducing themselves. Haruhi, seated behind narrator Kyon, announces she has no interest in ordinary humans and invites any aliens, time travellers, sliders (otherworlders) or espers to come and see her, then sits down. Kyon, who has just been hoping to talk to her, takes it for a bad joke; he and his classmates soon learn how serious she was.
