Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It sounds like a hippie joke from a man with a sixty-billion-dollar bounty on his head, and that is the point: Vash means it, and keeps the promise by never taking a life. The contrast between the grin and the revolver is the heart of Trigun. Fans use it ironically and sincerely as a sign-off, and it carried into the 2023 Stampede remake.

The line is Vash's signature sign-off in the 1998 Trigun anime, flashed with a peace sign. In episode 4, titled Love and Peace, Vash wanders into a bar in a sandstorm-bound town just as it is held up, and is taken hostage along with insurance agents Meryl and Milly. The hold-up turns out to be an old town feud involving the mayor, the sheriff and hired gunmen; Vash stops the killers without shooting anyone and the episode ends on his declaration that this world is made of love and peace. He repeats it across the series.
