The hook of the English opening theme, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (English dub, 2001)

It's time to d-d-d-duel!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

For a generation of kids who met the series through the English dub, this stuttered shout is the show: the theme song, the playground challenge, the meme. The stutter turns an ordinary announcement into a drumroll, and fans still use it to open any contest, from card tables to arguments. It belongs to the dub's theme rather than to Yami Yugi himself, which is why it never appears in the Japanese version.

Spoilers for Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel MonstersShow the scene

The stuttering call to duel is the hook of the English opening theme of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, written and arranged by Wayne Sharpe and John Siegler for the 4Kids dub that first aired in the United States on Kids' WB from 29 September 2001. The Yu-Gi-Oh! Wiki notes that the English dub always kept a theme with the same tune and the same words, built around this line, while the Japanese openings changed tune and words with each arc. It plays over clips of the Duelist Kingdom and later arcs. It is a theme-song lyric rather than a line the characters say in a particular scene.
