Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the shounen signature move at its simplest: a kid delinquent turns a finger pistol into a weapon and names it out loud. The attack grows as Yusuke does, from a thin shot that tires him out to a blast that can end a tournament, so the shout marks how far he has come. Fans still point two fingers and say it, and it became one of the best-known special-move calls in 90s anime.

"Spirit Gun!" (Rei Gan in Japanese) is the call for Yusuke Urameshi's signature attack in Yu Yu Hakusho, which began on Fuji TV on 10 October 1992. Yusuke learns it right after he is revived and made a Spirit Detective. On his first assignment, recovering three artifacts stolen from the Spirit World, Koenma trains him to fire his spirit energy from his fingertip, and the attack is named for the shape of his hand, a finger pistol. He uses it against the thieves Gouki, Kurama and Hiei. Later, Genkai's training turns the small beam into a basketball-sized ball, and then into a far larger blast; Rando copies it at the end of the Genkai Tournament.
