Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honorably. And Rhaegar died.

What it means

Our interpretation.

Jorah separates an admirable story from an effective outcome. Daenerys must decide how much the romance of her family’s past can tell her about surviving its future.

In Daenerys II of A Storm of Swords, Jorah responds to Daenerys’s recollection of Rhaegar’s nobility with the brutal fact of his defeat. His account recalls the Trident while she weighs how to rule and wage war. The repetition gives the sudden ending its force without making this a line spoken by Rhaegar.
