No Exit

Jean-Paul Sartre

To forget about the others? How utterly absurd! I feel you there, in every pore. Your silence clamors in my ears. You can nail up your mouth, cut your tongue out- but you can’t prevent your being there.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The speaker insists that others cannot be forgotten or shut out. Even complete silence is felt as a loud presence, and no self-mutilation, whether sealing the mouth or removing the tongue, could erase the fact that the other person exists nearby. The tone is intense and unyielding.
