Salt from My Attic

John A. Shedd

A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The ship's safety in harbour is set against the purpose for which it was built. Read as a metaphor, the contrast asks what is lost by remaining protected. Shelter has value, but the line suggests that fulfilling a purpose also requires venturing beyond it.
