Station Eleven ‧ 2014
The Traveling Symphony's motto, Station Eleven (2014)
Because survival is insufficient.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The motto answers the post-apocalyptic question of what is worth keeping: not just staying alive, but art, music and each other. Because it began as a line from a Star Trek episode, fans see it as a quiet nod from one humane science fiction to another. It has spread onto posters, tattoos, arts-council slogans and library walls.

The words are painted on the lead caravan of the Traveling Symphony, a troupe of actors and musicians who tour the Great Lakes region twenty years after the Georgia Flu has killed most of humanity, performing Shakespeare and classical music. Emily St. John Mandel took the phrase from Star Trek: Voyager: in the episode 'Survival Instinct', Seven of Nine says 'survival is insufficient'. Station Eleven came out in 2014 and won the Arthur C. Clarke Award the following year; the 2021 HBO Max series titled one episode after it.
