The American Crisis

Thomas Paine

These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Paine says hard times show who's really committed. Fair-weather patriots vanish when things get tough. Those who stay and serve now earn gratitude from everyone, and Paine says they've earned the thanks of both men and women.
