God sent his Singers upon earth With songs of sadness and of mirth, That they might touch the hearts of men, And bring them back to heaven again.

What it means
Our interpretation.
The poem says God sent singers into the world carrying songs of both sorrow and joy. Their purpose is to move people's hearts and, through that feeling, lead them back toward heaven. Music is pictured as a spiritual messenger, gentle and emotional rather than forceful.
