First Ideal of the Knights Radiant, The Way of Kings
Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The sequence makes a way of living more important than merely reaching a result. In the bridge camps, that means preserving people and choosing how to act while survival is uncertain.

In The Way of Kings chapter 43, Teft explains the ancient Knights Radiant’s First Ideal to Kaladin. The words belong to the Radiant orders rather than to one character, even though Teft introduces them in the bridge-camp story. Their relationship to Kaladin’s choices becomes concrete as he tries to keep Bridge Four alive.
