To Daffodils

Robert Herrick

Fair daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon: As yet the early-rising sun Has not attained his noon.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The flowers seem to disappear before the day has properly begun. Their brief life prompts grief because beauty arrives with so little time to enjoy it. Addressing them directly makes the loss intimate, turning a natural change into an occasion to notice how quickly something cherished can pass.
