Waiting for Godot · 1952
Given the existence ... of a personal God ... who ... loves us dearly ... it is established beyond all doubt ... that man ... wastes and pines ... for reasons unknown.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker strings together a mock-logical chain: assuming a personal God who loves us dearly, it is supposedly proven beyond doubt that humans waste away and pine for reasons unknown. The halting phrasing lets the claimed certainty sit uneasily beside the suffering.
