We don't become holy by acquiring merit badges and Brownie points.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
L'Engle says holiness isn't earned like a collection of prizes. Merit badges and Brownie points stand for tallying good behaviour, a deliberately small, childlike image. Her point is that being holy can't be reduced to a score.
