Dio Brando

It was I, Dio!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the cheapest and nastiest villain win in the series, and the line has become the template for a gloat: the speaker steps in and claims credit. The Japanese "Kono Dio da!" is clipped and boastful, and its English form became one of the most remixed memes in anime fandom.

Spoilers for JoJo's Bizarre AdventureShow the scene

The scene comes from the first episode of the 2012 anime, "Dio the Invader", set in Victorian England. Dio Brando, the adopted son in the Joestar house, has been tormenting his stepbrother Jonathan for years. When he learns that Erina Pendleton, the girl Jonathan has befriended, spent the day with him, Dio waits for her on her way home and kisses her by force. He then crows that her first kiss was not Jonathan's but his, in the line fans know as "Kono Dio da!". It leads to a fistfight that Jonathan wins, and to Dio's revenge on Jonathan's dog Danny.
