Star Platinum

Ora ora ora ora!

— JoJo's Bizarre Adventure  ·  2012

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the sound of a punch barrage written down, and it works because it never stops: the longer the string of 'ora', the more it hurts. Rivals' MUDA MUDA answers it, and the pair have become the most recognisable battle cries in anime. Fans yell it at anything that needs a flurry of repeated blows, from boxing to mashing a keyboard.

Spoilers for JoJo's Bizarre AdventureShow the scene

The cry belongs to Jotaro's Stand, Star Platinum, not to Jotaro himself. Whenever Star Platinum throws its barrage of punches, it shouts it, and the Stand first appears in the first episode of Stardust Crusaders, "A Man Possessed by an Evil Spirit" (aired 5 April 2014). The cry reaches its peak in the final fight in Cairo, where Star Platinum trades punch flurries with DIO's The World, and Jotaro imitates it once, when he is de-aged and has no Stand. The fan wiki traces the sound to noises in prog-rock records that creator Hirohiko Araki wrote down phonetically.
