Gravemind

I am a monument to all your sins.

— Halo 2 • 2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Nobody in Halo had heard the Flood speak before, and the line announces that the parasite is no mindless swarm but something that has been listening for ages and understands the humans, Covenant and Forerunners better than they understand themselves. Its mournful, hissing delivery made it one of the best-remembered villain introductions of the Xbox era. Bungie liked it enough that Halo: Reach named a Legendary-difficulty achievement after it.

It is the Gravemind's first line in Halo 2 (2004). In the opening cutscene of the level Gravemind, Master Chief wakes held aloft by a tentacle in the dark beneath High Charity, with Cortana asking what the thing is. The vast, many-jawed creature answers her unspoken question by naming itself a monument to all your sins. A tentacle then drags in the Elite known as the Arbiter, the Covenant's disgraced Thel 'Vadamee, and the Gravemind addresses them both, one of them machine and nerve, the other flesh and faith, before it has an infected Prophet of Regret and the Forerunner Monitor of Delta Halo speak in turn. The Gravemind is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
