Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The Chief hardly speaks, so a short sentence carries the weight of a speech: it tells Hood, and the player, that he is not coming home to be a hero but going back to the war. Players read it as the promise that became Halo 3. The game ended so suddenly that the line is now remembered as much for the cliffhanger as for the words.
