Inigo Montoya

I want my father back, you son of a bitch!

— The Princess Bride  ·  1987

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Years of grief collapse into one sentence, said coldly and without a flourish. The earlier 'Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya' is the line the internet quotes, but this is the one that pays it off: the swordsman who lost his father as a boy gets the only thing he ever asked for. It is the emotional peak of the film.

Spoilers for The Princess BrideShow the scene

Inside Prince Humperdinck's castle, Inigo Montoya finally faces Count Rugen, the six-fingered man who killed his father. He opens with the speech he has rehearsed for most of his life, repeats it louder, and carves matching scars into Rugen's cheeks. Rugen begs and offers money and power. Inigo tells him to offer everything he asks for, and when Rugen says anything, Inigo delivers the line and runs him through. Rugen drops dead on the floor.
