Miracle Max

Have fun stormin' da castle!

— The Princess Bride  ·  1987

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Enjoyment is wished for an activity that sounds strenuous and dangerous. Combining have fun with an assault on a castle gives the undertaking the language of an ordinary outing. The contrast is contained in the words, without establishing who is leaving or how the farewell is performed.

Miracle Max calls it after Inigo and Fezzik as they head out of the door with the miracle pill that should revive Westley in time to stop Prince Humperdinck's wedding, while his wife Valerie waves them off. She has already warned them to wait fifteen minutes for full potency and not to go swimming for at least an hour afterwards. Once they're gone, Valerie whispers, "Think it'll work?", and Max mutters that it would take a miracle.
