Oh. My. God!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is the sound of Chandler's worst nightmare walking back into the room. Janice's stretched, nasal delivery makes each word its own small disaster, and the show treats her arrival as a jump scare for the whole group. It became one of the best-known impressions of 1990s sitcom, and a quick way to say that someone is unbearable in a way you can't help noticing.

Spoilers for FriendsShow the scene

Janice Litman, Chandler's loud, nasal, on-again off-again girlfriend, first appears in season 1's "The One with the East German Laundry Detergent" (1994), where Chandler tries and fails to break up with her. Maggie Wheeler plays her, and her trademark is the cry of "Oh. My. God!", each word separated by a pause and a flap of the hands. She keeps turning up unannounced: the season 2 finale, "The One with Barry and Mindy's Wedding", closes with her walking into Central Perk and shouting it at Chandler. The gag outlasts the romance, and she reappears at intervals to the end of the series.
