Kirk

Khaaaaan!

— Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan • 1982

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Fifteen years of grudge come back to Kirk in a single word. The scream is pure William Shatner and pure Kirk, an admiral who has spent the film feeling old suddenly roaring like the young captain he was. It has long outgrown the film: shorthand for theatrical rage, parodied endlessly, and still the first thing people shout at a Star Trek fan.

Deep inside the hollowed-out planetoid Regula, in the cavern where the Genesis experiment was tested, Kirk has survived Khan's attack only to watch him beam the Genesis device away. Khan comes on the communicator to gloat: he will leave Kirk as Kirk once left him, marooned for all eternity in the centre of a dead planet, buried alive. Kirk's answer is the scream. Khan doesn't know it yet, but Kirk and Spock's coded arrangement means the Enterprise is coming back for him.
