Scientists have always been pawns of the military!

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker claims that scientists have always been used as pawns by the military, serving purposes set by others rather than their own. It is an accusatory generalisation, a bitter view of research as something moved around and exploited by those who hold power.
