Malenia

I am Malenia. Blade of Miquella. And I have never known defeat.

— Elden Ring · 2022

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a boast that sounds like a statement of fact, and the fight makes it feel true: she is one of the game's toughest optional bosses, so many players lose to her again and again. The two sentences carry her identity as the devoted blade of her brother Miquella, and also what the game does with it, because she is later beaten and admits it herself. Players quote it as a shared joke about the hardest boss in the game.

Spoilers for Elden RingShow the scene

In Elden Ring (FromSoftware, 2022), Malenia is an optional boss waiting in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. When the player enters her arena, a cutscene shows her speaking of a long dream, a body of dull gold and rotted blood, and the one she has waited for. She names herself as Malenia, Blade of Miquella, and says she has never known defeat. She repeats the first sentence when she kills the player in the first phase. In her second phase she unleashes the scarlet rot, and if she is finally beaten she admits she has met her match.
