White Mask Varré, in a white mask and blood-red robes, raises a hand in mocking greeting on a grassy ridge of ruins as an armoured Tarnished approaches, the glowing golden Erdtree on the horizon.

Unfortunately for you, however, you are maidenless.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A velvety British aristocrat makes a fatal diagnosis, and the internet heard an insult. In-world it is a statement of fact, a Tarnished without a maiden has no one to guide their grace, but Torrens plays it with such relish that 'maidenless' became the community's all-purpose jab at anyone alone, stuck or losing. It is the best-travelled line in a game that loves cryptic dialogue.

Spoilers for Elden RingShow the scene

White Mask Varré, a masked figure in a war surgeon's garb, is an NPC in Elden Ring (2022), voiced by Pip Torrens, who greets the newly arrived Tarnished in Limgrave and styles himself their helpful guide. The line is his appraisal of their situation: they have no Finger Maiden to guide their grace. Under the flattery he is a devotee of Mohg, Lord of Blood, who recruits the player for Mohg's dynasty; he later asks for a cloth soaked in a Finger Maiden's blood, remarking that 'any maiden will do'.
