Margit, the Fell Omen

Foul Tarnished, in search of the Elden Ring. Emboldened by the flame of ambition.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a sentence that tells the player what the game thinks of them: a nobody, a trespasser, a fire that must be put out. Delivered in archaic English by a hulking Omen in a ragged cloak, it set the tone for Elden Ring's rule-of-the-gate bosses, and its 'foul Tarnished' phrasing has been copied in memes about the first brutal wall in the game.

The first big roadblock in Elden Ring (2022) stands at the gates of Stormveil Castle in Limgrave. As the player, a Tarnished, approaches, the Omen Margit the Fell appears on a nearby tower and leaps down to the courtyard, delivering these words in the intro cutscene. He goes on: someone must extinguish thy flame, and it shall be Margit the Fell. He then fights the player, and later hunts the player down again in the Capital Outskirts. Margit is revealed as the alter ego of Morgott, the Omen King.
