Master Chief

Sir... finishing this fight.

— Halo 2  ·  2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The Chief hardly speaks, so a short sentence carries the weight of a speech: it tells Hood, and the player, that he is not coming home to be a hero but going back to the war. Players read it as the promise that became Halo 3. The game ended so suddenly that the line is now remembered as much for the cliffhanger as for the words.

Spoilers for Halo 2Show the scene

Halo 2 ends on its last mission, The Great Journey. The Master Chief leaves Cortana behind in the Flood-overrun city of High Charity and takes a Forerunner dreadnought to Earth. In the final scene Lord Hood, commanding from a damaged orbital platform, asks him what he is doing on that ship. The Chief answers over the comm with this short reply, closing the game on a cliffhanger that sets up Halo 3.
