Mordin Solus, a grey-skinned salarian in a stained lab coat, stands at a glowing console at the top of a burning, shattered tower above a red Tuchanka canyon, sparks and golden cure particles rising into an orange sky.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Mordin's whole character in a sentence: a scientist who never hid behind statistics once he accepted the genophage was his work, and who reads his own death as a lab procedure that needs the right operator. The line sits in the middle of the game's most argued-over sacrifice, and fans quote it, usually with a lump in the throat, whenever a character takes on a duty only they can finish.

Near the end of the Tuchanka mission in Mass Effect 3, Shepard has helped Mordin Solus reach the Shroud, the salarian-built facility that will spread the cure for the genophage, the plague Mordin once helped engineer to curb the krogan. When the cure is sabotaged, Mordin insists on fixing it himself at the top of the tower, even if Shepard has to stop him. If Shepard lets him go, he thanks them over the comm as the tower shakes and says it had to be him, because someone else might have gotten it wrong. An explosion in the control room then kills him.
